Seven Summer Joints

I generally don’t do memes but this one is too fun to pass up, especially since Ill Mami passed me the hot potato and I didn’t get it together in time for this list.

“List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring or summer. Post these instructions in your blog along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they’re listening to.”

2000black – So Right

The internets is going crazy and rightfully so since the geniuses behind 4Hero, Silhouette Brown, Agent K and DKD are blessing us with new hot goodies.

De La Soul – Dinninit
Does this even need explanation?

Carl Anderson – Buttercup
I’m just getting hip to this cat some four years after he passed away. And Stevie Wonder lent a hand too?!? Songs like this are why digging is so rewarding.

Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 – Mas Que Nada
I was torn between this and Elza Soares’ version which is actually my favorite but I just saw Sergio at Wolf Trap and I’m still happy about it. It gets no more summery than that. Gotta big up the original though. Brasil here we come!

Louie Vega – Let The Children Play
My inner child needs as much help as he can get. This tune is like his vitamins. I REALLY want to play at or throw an afro-cuban party this summer. White skirts, congas and catching spirits. Maybe I just need to finally get to Libation.

Ronnie Foster – Mystic Brew
This lowers my blood pressure and makes me want to lay down in a hammock somewhere with the breeze gently rocking me back and forth. And yes, it did give birth to another perfect summer anthem.

Choklate – Reach For The Moon
Although it’s standard practice and I can’t find it streaming anywhere, I don’t want to post a download of this out of respect for the sista. I really want her to win and this is a lovely bit of work from her. Catch it on her myspace player and hopefully on an upcoming release.

  1. Argh… I have been a bum and have let new tunes escape me so far this summer. Working with kids this summer I have just been doing my best to steer clear of the kaka on the radio… It has been hard. Nonetheless… I have a few tunes that I sing to myself.

  2. they ain’t gotta be new!

  3. Electric Conversation – Vibe Change (Futuristica is the shit)

Tribute To Tenor Saw – Wake The Town (Original Rude Boy!)

Truck North (Money Makin Jam Boys, Roots Crew) – 2 Us (he’s next! http://www.myspace.com/trucknorth)

Kim Hill – Plain Jane (DJ Presto’s CD)

Dwele – Jimmystaydown (Rise is the best cd he made, too bad it never saw the light of day)

MF Doom – One Beer (Doom and Madlib)

Swing Out Sister – Breakout (most slept on group ever)

  4. My two cents knucka……..

  5. Okay, let me get right to the point.

    1) The Come Up – Fortilive
The cats from Hawaii who kill it on my Handcrafted mixtapes. Illmind does all the beats. Tomfoolery at it’s best. – http://jeremyianthomas.com/thecomeup/

    2) Nightmares – Clipse ft. Bilal & Pharell
Just did a mixtape with Bilal and while digging for some joints for it, I stumbled across this sleeper. So nice.

    3) Spirits In Transit – 4Hero
From the classic Two Pages album that floored me forever.

    4) Mighty Dub – Zed Bias ft. Randolph
This joint makes me act like I’m at The Jazznova / Bugz party in Miami. I basically try to move every part of my body at once as fast as possible.

    5) Many Moons – Janelle Monae
She is exquisite and this song is exactly what I’ve been looking for for the past 5 years. Thank you.

    6) Don’t Touch Me – Busta Rhymes
This is the Busta that I’ve been missing. He holds the title for best at riding a beat.

    7) Spaz – NERD
This song makes me wanna jump on the roof of a classic car and throw off the first person who tries to join me. In other words, it excites me.
